The Legend of Zelda Movie Begins Filming Soon – And It's Only the Beginning

Get your Master Sword ready—The Legend of Zelda is headed to the big screen, and not just for one film. We’re getting a full-blown trilogy.

After months of rumors and teases, it’s finally real. Nintendo’s cinematic adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will officially kick off production this November in New Zealand, with the first installment expected to premiere in March 2027. But here’s the kicker—it won’t be a one-and-done affair. According to new reports, the film will be the first in a trilogy, with the cast locked into three movies over the next six years.

Yes. You read that right. Three movies. One epic journey. Let’s gooo.

🎥 Filming Begins – And We're Already Hyped

While the basic plot details are being kept under wraps (classic Nintendo), early listings describe it as following a “young warrior destined to protect a magical kingdom from dark forces.” So... yeah, sounds like classic Link. The backdrop of New Zealand promises sweeping, fantastical landscapes—think Middle-earth, but with rupees and Bokoblins.

The choice of location makes sense too. If you’re going to bring Hyrule to life in live-action, you need a setting that feels otherworldly but grounded. New Zealand has that in spades, and the production team seems ready to go all-in on making this feel cinematic from the first frame.

🎮 The Creative Dream Team

The film’s production is being overseen by none other than Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of the Zelda franchise. That alone should ease a lot of fan nerves. When Miyamoto is involved, Nintendo usually doesn’t miss. His fingerprints will be all over the tone, the style, and—hopefully—the spirit of the world we’ve all grown up exploring.

Also joining the helm is Avi Arad, a name that might ring a few Marvel bells. He was the producer behind Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man films, and a slew of Marvel adaptations over the years. This isn’t his first rodeo when it comes to turning fan-favorite IPs into blockbuster gold. Having him onboard suggests this Zelda adaptation will be taking its Hollywood transformation seriously—and with style.

🗡️ A Nintendo Cinematic Universe in the Making?

Let’s zoom out for a second. The Legend of Zelda movie comes hot on the heels of the successful (and incredibly fun) Super Mario Bros. Movie. While critics were split, fans flocked to theaters and made it one of Nintendo’s most successful cinematic outings. That kind of momentum doesn’t go unnoticed.

Nintendo is clearly learning from past lessons and slowly building something bigger. A carefully crafted Zelda trilogy could serve as the foundation for a Nintendo cinematic universe. Imagine crossovers. Imagine a Smash Bros. movie. Too soon? Maybe. But with Mario, Zelda, and possibly Metroid films all in the rumor mill, the path is starting to form.

For now, though, it’s all about Link and Zelda—and their story is finally getting the epic, live-action treatment it’s always deserved.

🧝‍♂️ What Can We Expect?

Here’s what we hope to see:

  • A rich, detailed Hyrule that blends fantasy with emotion
  • Zelda as more than just a damsel—give her power, give her a story
  • The timeless struggle between Link and Ganon (or Ganondorf!)
  • Dungeons. Real, puzzling, visually epic dungeons
  • Music that makes your heart swell like you just found the Master Sword

And please—don’t skimp on the magic. Zelda has always been about that feeling of wonder, discovery, and destiny. If the filmmakers can tap into that, we’re in for something truly special.

This isn’t just another video game adaptation. The Legend of Zelda is sacred territory for millions of gamers around the world. Turning it into a movie trilogy is an ambitious move, but with Miyamoto and Arad steering the ship, there's reason to believe it’ll honor the legacy while introducing the story to a whole new generation.

March 2027 feels far away, but the journey to Hyrule has officially begun—and we’re more than ready to follow the Hero of Time wherever he leads us.
