- Guardians of the Galaxy was almost a very different movie, featuring Thanos as the villain and Star-Lord as cosmic royalty.
- Rocket Raccoon was nearly cut, and an obscure character named Bug almost joined the team.
- Nicole Perlman’s original script laid the foundation, but James Gunn’s rewrite gave us the quirky Guardians we know and love.
Guardians of the Galaxy's Early Drafts Were WAY Different
Imagine a version of Guardians of the Galaxy where Thanos, not Ronan, was the big bad. Where Star-Lord was literal space royalty, and where Rocket Raccoon didn’t even exist. Sounds wild, right? Well, believe it or not, those were the original blueprints for Marvel’s most unlikely blockbuster. Before James Gunn sprinkled his signature chaotic magic onto the project, Guardians was headed down a very different path — one filled with serious cosmic drama, missing fan-favorite characters, and a whole lot less classic pop music.
It all started with Nicole Perlman, a sci-fi-obsessed writer who took a major gamble by choosing an obscure Marvel comic about a ragtag group of space misfits. Her early drafts set the stage for what would become one of the MCU’s most beloved teams — but not without massive rewrites, creative clashes, and a heated battle over screenwriting credit. So buckle up, grab your Walkman, and let's blast off into the crazy alternate history of Guardians of the Galaxy — the version that almost was, and the galaxy we nearly got.

Nicole Perlman: The Unsung Pioneer
Before Marvel Studios became the unstoppable force it is today, Nicole Perlman was part of Marvel’s experimental screenwriters program. She had her pick of iconic characters to adapt — and she chose Guardians of the Galaxy, a team even hardcore comic nerds barely knew. Talk about a gamble.
Pearlman, who grew up surrounded by aerospace scientists in Boulder, Colorado, loved sci-fi to her core. Her early scripts leaned heavily into the cosmic, drawing from Marvel’s obscure 1960s Guardians lineup before pivoting to the 2008 reboot — you know, the lovable bunch of space weirdos we now adore.
Nova Was Almost the Star
In Pearlman's early drafts, Nova — yep, Richard Rider himself — was set to be the main focus. Picture a high school kid turned intergalactic cop instead of the charming man-child Peter Quill. But Marvel’s Nate Moore nudged her toward Star-Lord instead, seeing bigger potential in a rogue-ish hero.
Under Pearlman’s pen, Peter Quill evolved from a stoic space soldier into a scrappy, Han Solo-type with a backpack full of Star Wars toys. (Seriously, that almost made it into the final cut.)
Thanos Was Supposed to Be the Main Villain
Forget Ronan the Accuser. Originally, Thanos — THE Thanos — was lined up to be the big bad of Guardians. Pearlman’s idea? Pit a bumbling idiot like Quill against the most terrifying cosmic villain imaginable. It would’ve been chaotic perfection.
However, Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers) stepped in and suggested Marvel save Thanos for a bigger, looming threat over the entire MCU. Enter Ronan, stage left.
Star-Lord: Space Prince?
Another scrapped idea? Peter Quill was almost royalty. In the early versions, Quill’s dad was going to be J’Son, Emperor of the Spartoi Empire — making Peter literal space royalty.
Marvel axed it. Joss Whedon thought it made Quill too unrelatable, and James Gunn agreed. They wanted Quill to feel like a scrappy, regular dude, not another hidden prince cliché (cough Star Wars cough).
No Rocket Raccoon?!
Believe it or not, Rocket Raccoon almost got the boot from the lineup. Early drafts left him out entirely because execs were terrified he’d come off too cartoonish — like, Jar Jar Binks bad.
Luckily, Pearlman fought for him, arguing Rocket could be the heart of the team if written right. And Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige loved Rocket too. Thank the stars, because can you imagine Guardians without everyone's favorite trash panda?
Bug Was Almost a Guardian Too
Remember Bug from Marvel’s Micronauts? No? Well, he almost joined the team. But due to weird licensing issues (thanks, Hasbro), and some concerns over team chemistry, Bug was left on the cutting room floor.
Honestly? Probably for the best. Five Guardians was the magic number.
Awesome Mix Origins
The Awesome Mix is such a core part of Guardians’ identity, right? Turns out, it was a beautiful blend of both Nicole Pearlman’s and James Gunn’s ideas.
Pearlman wanted Star-Lord to hold onto Earth’s music as an emotional tether — her draft included ‘80s and ‘90s tracks like Guns N' Roses. Gunn took it a step further, dialing it back to '60s and '70s pop hits, and structuring entire scenes around the songs. (Fun fact: Come and Get Your Love wasn’t even the first choice for Quill’s dance intro!)
Chris Pratt: From Chubby Andy to Star-Lord
Casting Chris Pratt wasn't an instant "yes." In fact, James Gunn thought it was a joke. Parks and Recreation's chubby goofball playing a ripped, roguish action hero? Hard pass.
But after meeting Pratt in person, Gunn changed his mind — fast. Pratt nailed his screen test (after nearly blowing it) and went on to drop 60 pounds in six months to transform into Star-Lord.
Oh, and fun trivia: Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Zachary Levi (Shazam!) were also top contenders for Star-Lord.
Behind the Scenes Drama: Who Wrote It?
When it came time for screenwriting credit, things got messy. Gunn rewrote Pearlman’s script pretty heavily, changing tone, structure, and adding major new elements like the Walkman.
Still, the Writers Guild of America ruled that both Pearlman and Gunn deserved credit — making Pearlman the first woman to be credited as a screenwriter on a Marvel Studios movie. Total win.
What Could've Been...
Honestly? A Thanos-led Guardians would've been dark as hell. No Rocket would’ve been criminal. Star-Lord being a literal prince might’ve been cringe. And without Nicole Pearlman’s initial vision or James Gunn’s chaos-fueled rewrites, we might not have gotten the quirky, heartfelt masterpiece that Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be.
In a multiverse somewhere, there's a very different Guardians movie playing... but personally? I’m glad we got this one.
