- Minecraft on Switch suffers from lag, slow chunk loading, frame drops, and login nightmares—but is it still playable? We put it to the test.
- Despite being one of the best-selling Switch games, Minecraft struggles with performance issues, crashes, and poor optimization. Here’s why.
- Want to play Minecraft on Switch? Expect stutters, lag, and long loading times, especially in late-game survival or large builds.
Minecraft Switch Edition – Broken, Buggy, or Just Misunderstood?
The Timeless Classic… With a Twist?
Minecraft is one of those legendary, never-dying games that’s played on everything from high-end PCs to your grandma’s old tablet. The Nintendo Switch seemed like the perfect platform for it—play anywhere, build anywhere, and survive on the go. But… is the Switch version actually playable? Or is it one of the worst ways to experience Minecraft?
Despite being one of the best-selling third-party games on the Switch, this version is infamous for lag, bugs, performance issues, and one of the worst login systems imaginable. Some players swear it’s unplayable, while others just accept its quirks and push through. So, I decided to test it to its absolute limits—and trust me, it got ugly.
Let’s break down just how BROKEN Minecraft on Switch really is and if it’s still worth playing in 2024.
1. The Microsoft Login Nightmare 😡
Before you even break your first tree, you have to log into your Microsoft account. And if you thought this was a one-time thing, think again.
- Every single time you launch the game, there's a high chance you’ll have to log back in.
- This means scanning a QR code, checking your email for a security code, then switching between a browser, your inbox, and your console.
- Even Fortnite and other cross-platform games handle logins better—why hasn’t this been fixed?
If you want to play online, use your own skins, or access anything you bought in the marketplace, this painful process is 100% required. A massive inconvenience for a game that’s supposed to be easy to pick up and play.
2. Survival Mode: The Struggle Begins 🌲🔨
Once I finally got into Survival Mode, I immediately started noticing the problems.
✅ The Good: The game technically runs at 60 FPS (frames per second), which is rare for third-party Switch games.
❌ The Bad:
- Constant frame stuttering—even when doing simple tasks like chopping trees or mining blocks.
- Chunk loading is painfully slow—walk too fast, and the world just refuses to generate.
- Objects appear out of nowhere, stopping you mid-walk or forcing you to backtrack.
- Sometimes you get accidental X-ray vision and can see through the ground, exposing caves.
The biggest issue? The longer you play, the worse it gets.
As I built a large village with farms, mobs, and houses, the frame rate completely tanked. Opening menus, talking to villagers, and even accessing my inventory felt like a chore.
By the late game, it was barely playable—unless I was willing to massacre half my villagers and farm animals just to improve performance.
3. Exploring the World? More Like Waiting for It to Load 🌍
One of the best parts of Minecraft is the freedom to explore. But on the Switch, that experience is full of interruptions:
- The render distance is painfully low, meaning you can’t see villages, mobs, or landmarks until you’re practically on top of them.
- When using a boat or horse, chunks struggle to load, often making it impossible to navigate smoothly.
- Sometimes the game freezes mid-walk because a tree or mountain decides to pop into existence at the last second.
Compared to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions, the Switch version feels outdated in terms of performance. Even older console editions had more stable rendering.
4. Late-Game Performance – From Bad to Worse 🏡🐮
The real problems start when you’ve put in the hours and built up your world.
- Once your village has a decent population of villagers and animals, frame rates tank to unplayable levels.
- Menus start lagging—even something as simple as opening your inventory takes forever.
- Delayed sound effects—sometimes, I’d mine a block, and the sound would play 30 seconds later.
- Loading new areas can literally get you killed—because enemies spawn in before you do.
This isn’t even a rare issue—this happens to almost everyone who plays Minecraft long-term on Switch.
5. Creative Mode – Still Broken, Just Prettier 🎨
Switching to Creative Mode didn’t magically fix things. While it does remove survival challenges, all the same technical issues remain:
- Frame stuttering is still constant.
- Blocks don’t load fast enough, making flying through the world feel sluggish.
- The TNT test? Yeah, it absolutely destroyed the game’s performance.
Building cool things is still possible, but it’s nowhere near as smooth as on PC or other consoles.
6. Marketplace Maps & Servers – A Mixed Bag 🏰🎮
The Minecraft Marketplace is supposed to offer fun, pre-built worlds from big names like Disney, Sonic, and SpongeBob. But on Switch?
- These maps chug hard—frame drops below 30 FPS happen constantly.
- Multiplayer servers surprisingly work okay, but performance varies depending on the game mode.
- Minecraft Realms (paid private servers) seem to run smoother than locally hosted worlds, which is suspiciously convenient for Microsoft.
It feels like Switch players are being pushed toward paying for Realms just to get a smooth experience.
Why Is the Switch Version So Bad? 🤔
Minecraft on Switch wasn’t always this bad. When it first launched, it ran decently, but then massive updates started rolling out:
- The Caves & Cliffs update expanded world generation, making things more complex and harder for the Switch to handle.
- Updates now launch simultaneously across all platforms, but Switch doesn’t get the optimization it needs.
- The Switch’s aging hardware is struggling—while new features keep coming, performance keeps dropping.
At this point, Minecraft has outgrown the Switch, and unless Mojang optimizes it, it’s only going to get worse.
Final Verdict: Is Minecraft on Switch Worth It? 🎮💀
✅ Pros:
✔️ It’s still Minecraft—the core game is still fun if you can tolerate the issues.
✔️ Portable Minecraft is still a great concept.
✔️ Split-screen multiplayer actually works surprisingly well.
❌ Cons:
❌ Horrible login process—expect frustration every time you launch the game.
❌ Severe performance drops in both Survival & Creative Mode.
❌ Slow chunk loading makes exploring frustrating.
❌ Late-game builds cause lag so bad it’s borderline unplayable.
Final Score: 5/10 – Playable, But Painful
If the Switch is your only option, you can still enjoy Minecraft, but expect constant technical problems. If you have any other way to play, I’d highly recommend skipping the Switch version.
