Cosplaying Under 18? Read These 5 Game-Changing Tips

So, you’ve caught the cosplay bug—whether it was from scrolling past an epic Demon Slayer group on TikTok or seeing someone rock a killer Zelda costume at a con—and now you’re wondering: “Can I do that, too?” The answer is absolutely yes! But if you’re under 18, there are a few extra things you’ll want to keep in mind before diving headfirst into the wonderful chaos of wigs, foam, and conventions.

I started cosplaying when I was just a tween, and trust me—being an underage cosplayer has its own unique challenges and perks. From costumes that mysteriously don’t fit six months later (thanks, puberty!) to figuring out how to attend cons safely without your parents embarrassing you (spoiler: it’s possible), I’ve been there.

Whether you're 13 and just discovering your love of anime or 17 and ready to build your first armor set, this guide’s for you. I’m breaking down five essential, experience-based tips to help you cosplay confidently, stay safe, and have a blast doing it.

Let’s jump into it, mini-heroes!

Tip #1: Start Simple – Your Growth Spurt Will Thank You

As a teen, your body’s going through a million changes—and I don’t just mean emotions and awkward hair. I once poured my heart into a costume just before my 13th birthday, only for it to not fit three months later. Devastating.

Stick to projects that are simple, budget-friendly, and quick to make. That way, you’ll actually wear them before outgrowing them. Plus, you’ll build solid crafting skills without feeling overwhelmed. Save the mega-detailed, ten-foot-wingspan builds for your future con quests.

Tip #2: Cosplay from Media That's Appropriate for Your Age

I get it—you’ve probably watched shows and played games rated above your age (we’ve all been there). But cosplaying from mature-rated media can open doors to adult conversations and situations that you might not be ready for—especially at conventions.

People often assume that if you’re cosplaying an R-rated character, you’re an adult too, which can lead to some awkward or even unsafe encounters. You can still cosplay older characters, like Elsa or Deku, as long as the content itself is age-appropriate. It’s not about rules—it’s about keeping you safe and respected in the community.

Tip #3: Be Smart and Safe at Conventions

Conventions are magical chaos zones full of lightsabers, loud music, and people who really love tentacles. But they’re also crowded spaces, and unfortunately, not everyone is there with good intentions.

If you're under 16, go with a parent, guardian, or trusted adult. And always stick with a group—never wander off alone. Make plans ahead of time, stay connected with your group, and keep emergency contacts handy. My mom used to go to cons with me—and yeah, sometimes it was awkward—but she also had my back when creeps started lurking. Better safe than sorry.

Tip #4: Don't Take It Personally If Adults Keep Their Distance

It can sting when older cosplayers you admire don’t instantly become your BFF. But here’s the truth: a lot of adult cosplayers are careful about being friends with underage folks—not because they don’t like you, but because it can get messy.

People might assume things or question the friendship. So don’t take it to heart. Some of my closest cosplay friends didn’t fully connect with me until I was over 18—and now, years later, we laugh about it. Respecting those boundaries now sets you up for even better friendships down the road.

Tip #5: Don't Compare Yourself to Adult Cosplayers

I know it’s tempting. You scroll Instagram and see someone with perfect armor, flawless makeup, and 3,000 followers. Meanwhile, you’re covered in hot glue and safety pins. We’ve all been there.

But remember—those adult cosplayers? They probably have more time, more money, and years of experience. Instead of comparing, use them as inspiration. Your growth is just beginning. In fact, with all the free resources online now, you’ve got a head start that many of us never had.

So give yourself grace. Your journey is just as valid, just as exciting—and uniquely yours.

Cosplay is one of the coolest ways to express your love for fandoms, flex your creativity, and connect with other geeks just like you. And starting young? That’s a power-up, not a setback. These five tips aren’t about holding you back—they’re here to protect your spark, your creativity, and your safety so you can keep cosplaying for years to come.

Whether you’re rocking closet cosplay at your first con or slowly crafting your dream character, you’re already on the right path. Don’t rush the process. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. And most importantly—don’t forget to have fun with it. Cosplay should make you feel awesome, not anxious.

We see you, young cosplayer. Your journey is just beginning, and it’s going to be epic.
